For over a century, the "lazy Malay" stereotype was used to explain Malay poverty under British rule. Drawing on extensive archival records, this study dismantles that myth by examining Malay migration and settlement in Kerian, Perak (1816–1947). Long before colonial intervention, Malay families cleared forests, established communities, and pioneered rice cultivation in the region. Rather than reflecting a lack of initiative, persistent rural poverty was driven by restrictive colonial policies, market fluctuations, and colonial economic structures.
