The Take Five Series is a compilation of short presentations converted into easy
reading books to help people who are looking for a quick break in their daily
routine and press the “pause” or maybe the “reset” button in their busy life.
Each book in this Series starts with a Thumb’s Up on an idea or goal to pursue
though our five senses. In this book, we will explore the Japanese ethos of Ikigai
which means the “reason to live” as applied in the Malaysian context. Following
the five pillars of Ikigai, Ken Mogi (2017) suggests that we should start small as
“Ikigai gives your life a purpose, while giving you the grit to carry on.” The Index
finger queries for direction in pursuit of your purpose in life and it begins with
releasing oneself. The Middle finger is the “pause” finger, asking you to reflect
on your reality whether you have harmony and sustainability. The Ring finger is
finding joy in small things as you practice the five Ikigai pillars. Last, but not least,
the book ends with the Little finger which is synonymous to making a promise
to oneself of being mindful, in the here and now as you pursue your Ikigai or
purpose in life regardless whether you are just starting out or nearing retirement.
